My New Love…Holden Beach

My very first visit to Holden Beach was in 2014.  My husband and I were down visiting his brother who just built a beautiful 6 bedroom oceanfront home in West Holden Beach. Having lived in North Carolina all my life, minus a few years in Texas, I had never heard of Holden Beach.   Since the very first visit, and now 3 years later, my husband and I have made the leap of faith and are now living in the Holden Beach area.  I feel the over powering urge to share a few of my favorite things that make me pinch myself and thank my lucky stars we get to call Holden Beach home.

The Bridge

Let me just say, Holden Beach Bridge is different than any other bridge I have ever traveled on.  It has that roller coaster feel to it as you travel up and over to the island.  I still catch my breath every time I cross it.  For me, the views from the bridge is nothing short of a spiritual experience.   The views of the ocean and the beach from this angle are truly extraordinary!

The Island

The first thing my husband and I noticed on our very first visit to Holden was how neat and manicured the homes and lawns were. Yes, lawns!  Beautiful green grass instead of the usual beach fare of wild grass and weeds growing willy nilly everywhere.  All the homes, big or small, looked well cared for.  You immediately get the feeling this is where families live and vacation and have been for generations.

Family Beach

I love the forethought of the Town of Holden Beach to place sideways so people can walk or ride bikes in the evening after a long fun day on the beach. It seems that every time I ride by, there is always families outside talking and playing.  The Town of Holden Beach in their infinite wisdom,  added strategically placed fitness stations for runners/walkers to use as they workout.  How cool is that!?

I love the residential feel on Holden Beach. There are a few restaurants and retail shops, but it is a far cry from the crazy busy mega shopping capital of other beaches. Don’t get me wrong, I love shopping, but I can do that anywhere. Beach time for me is spending time on the BEACH! And on Holden that’s what you get!

Speaking of Shopping…

Shallotte is a neighboring town with all the shopping you need! It is a short 7 -8 miles south of Holden Beach. (Not to mention you pass all these wonderful consignment shops along the way).  In the Shallotte Crossing Shopping Center, you will find Home Depot, my husband’s new found favorite home improvement store and the best standalone Belk’s Department store ever! (OK, I am being a little bias, but it is worth mentioning my affection for).  Any way, It’s small, but every time I go in there, I swear I find all these great deals on things I want and things I didn’t even know I wanted!  Shallotte also has the standard Super Walmart, and a plethora of great restaurants to try.  So, if you are looking to check out your neighboring town, go ahead, it will be worth it!

Favorite Restaurants

You don’t have to travel far to get a great meal on Holden Beach.  Some of my favorites…

The Provision Company is located on the mainland just before you cross the bridge on the right.   Follow the dirt road until you see a white and red building.   If you need an address for your GPS it’s 1343 Cedar Landing Road SW, Holden Beach, NC.  Their menu consists of fresh seafood, chicken sandwiches and great burgers.  Order  at the counter then head out onto their outdoor deck to wait for your name to be called!  Their beer and drinks are on the honor system;  grab them as you need them.  Just don’t forget to pay before you leave.

Another one of my favorites is Castaways Raw Bar & Grill .  Castaways Raw Bar & Grill  is a great place to get lost for a while and enjoy great food, music and amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.  It’s  like  entering an episode of Gilligan’s Island every time.  Will Gilligan come over and wait on us or Ginger?   As a kid who grew up on daily doses of Gilligan’s Island, going to Castaways always makes me happy!  Located on Holden Beach just left of the bridge.  They have great open-air dining and live entertainment through the summer.  They have amazing seafood dishes, burgers and salads!  It is worth the visit!!

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream!

And for dessert, you MUST TRY Beachesn- Cream  Their ice creams are homemade and I don’t know what’s in their recipes, but they are soooo good!!! They make all their ice cream on site every day and there are so many flavors to choose from!   Every time I go, they have added new flavors to their menu.  Located on the Holden Beach Causeway, 3316 Holden Beach Road, Supply, NC, this place is our family favorite!! No trip to the beach is complete without getting an ice-cream from Beaches-N-Cream!!

These are a few of the things I love about Holden! For more information go to NC Brunswick Islands.  Of course, there are so many other things I didn’t mention, but of course you will find that out when you come!
